This depends on the software you use, though the most likely places are (depending on the version of Windows you use) the “Shared documents” folder (in XP and Windows 2000), and your previous desktop, usually found in “C:\Documents and Settings\[User name]\Desktop” in Windows XP or 2000, or in “C:\Windows\Desktop” in older versions of Windows.
If this doesn’t help, search your computer over your network using your recovery computer; you can find the search option in “Network Neighborhood” or “My Network Places”. If you’re looking for letters, the most likely file extensions are DOC, RTF, and ODT. To search using the DOC extension, type *.doc into the search box; this causes your computer to search for any file ending with those three letters.
