This is our hummingbird site. We will provide you with a Window on the Middle of Nowhere that profiles hummingbirds during hummingbird season; then we will showcase some other beautiful features in our area, including ocean, island, and farm scenes.
There are several things that you should know while viewing the magnificent little hummingbirds.
Second there are several types of hummingbirds in the Middle of Nowhere. The most common is the Rufus Humming bird (Selasphorus rufus) the male has bright Rufus upperparts and flanks and an orange-red throat. The female is green above with a Rufus tinge on the rump and flanks.
Often while feeding, they do not perch but hover in front of the flower, sipping the nectar. We have experience birds at all hours but mid-morning and just before sunset (Pacific time) seem to be favorite feeding times. These little birds don’t like to share so the first bird to a source of food will protect it. You may see one push another off the feeder.
It’s wonderful to see these beautiful birds return to the Middle of Nowhere. These feather faced friends go somewhere in the winter – usually Mexico. Perhaps there is some thing more to learn from hummingbirds than meets the eye.
The male and females enjoy different territories and it’s the female who calls on the male at mating time. They lay 2 white eggs in a lichen-covered cup of plant down and spider web attached to a branch.
