1. What is Selkie Rescue Photo Recovery?

Selkie Photo Recovery is an easy-to-use program which rescues your photos, images and graphics from your computer after it crashes. Even if your computer's own Operating System won't boot, Selkie Photo Recovery will. Selkie Photo Recovery is a “Bootable CD based File Server” which means you use it to bypass your crashed operating system. You will rescue your files in as few as three keystrokes and in about three minutes.

2. When can I use Selkie Photo Recovery?

You use Selkie Photo Recovery when your computer will not work because its operating system is not functioning. This includes all versions of Windows and all systems compatible with Intel (Selkie Photo Recovery is not compatible with Macintosh). Selkie Photo Recovery needs at least 32 MB RAM and a working keyboard. If the hard drive or CD-ROM drive do not work then Selkie Photo Recovery will not work.

3. Why would I need it?

If your computer has crashed and there are irreplaceable photographs, images and graphics on it, you need Selkie Photo Recovery. Selkie Photo Recovery gives you quick access to your photos and images and you can copy them to a functioning computer safely.

4. How is Selkie Photo Recovery distributed?

You can order a CD to be shipped to you, or you can purchase and download Selkie Rescue. If you purchase and download Selkie Photo Recovery you'll also receive instructions to create the bootable Selkie Photo Recovery CD.

5. Who can use Selkie Photo Recovery?

Selkie Photo Recovery was designed for inexperienced computer users as well as experienced technicians. It has two modes of operation, Basic and Advanced. In Basic Mode the user only needs to know the Network Name of the computer used to rescue data files. If you don’t know the Network Name or it doesn’t exist, Selkie Photo Recovery will automatically create one. Selkie Rescue takes care of everything else. In Advanced Mode the person using the software has almost total control over how Selkie Photo Recovery operates. The user can avoid malfunctioning hardware and specify exactly how the Rescuer Computer and Selkie Photo Recovery will communicate.

6. How do I use Selkie Photo Recovery?

To use Selkie Photo Recovery the crashed computer must be networked, or connected, with a working computer. (If your crashed computer is not networked, see the User’s Manual in your Start Menu or online). First, start up (boot) your crashed computer using the Selkie Photo Recovery CD, reading the screens. Hit Enter until you can choose your Workgroup Name. Keep hitting Enter until it tells you to go to the working computer, which we call your Rescue Computer. Go there. Use Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places) to navigate to the computer identified on the Network as Selkie Photo Recovery. Navigate further until you find your Data Files. Copy them to the Rescue Computer. You're done.

7. Why is it so easy?

Selkie Photo Recovery is designed to automate the process of setting up a File Server so you can quickly and easily rescue your data files.

8. What do I get when I buy Selkie Photo Recovery?

That depends on how you buy it. If you buy a CD shipped to you it will be a personalized, ready-to-use copy of Selkie Photo Recovery. You can use it immediately to rescue your data files. If you buy a download version you receive an electronic file that will walk you through the installation. For the price of Selkie Photo Recovery you also receive complimentary upgrades that are attached to your personal ID registered with Tugboat Enterprises.

9. How and why is it personalized?

The Selkie Photo Recovery CD is personalized with your name and contact information. This makes it easier for Tugboat Enterprises to send you your complimentary upgrades, and it makes Selkie Photo Recovery a little bit more difficult to steal.

10. How many copies of the Selkie Photo Recovery CD can I make?

The license for the Product (Selkie Photo Recovery) is held by the registered purchaser. The registered purchaser may install, use, access, display and run one copy of the Product on a computer owned by the registered purchaser, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). The first license purchased may be used during the rescue process on two networked computers without violating the terms of the EULA (End User License Agreement). A license should be purchased for each workstation computer owned by the registered owner of the software. You can't sell the CDs. You can't lend them. You can't give them away.

11. There are other ways to get data off a crashed computer, why use Selkie Photo Recovery

Selkie Photo Recovery is fast and safe. All other methods for getting data take time and risk that the data will be lost when the computer is taken apart to access the files. Selkie Photo Recovery is incredibly simple to use.

12. Do other programs let me do the same thing as Selkie Photo Recovery?

No. Norton Ghost is limited and only lets you create images of workstation systems to make restoration easier. To create initial images, you need to have Ghost running within a working Microsoft Windows operating system – you cannot create a backup image if Windows has failed. Selkie Photo Recovery is designed to run even on systems where Windows has become corrupted because Selkie Photo Recovery does not depend on Windows in any way.

13. Why such a simple design?

Selkie Photo Recovery’s bootable CD is designed to run on sick computers – systems that are failing in some way and need to be accessed with a minimum of fuss. It is designed to put as little strain on an ailing computer as possible. Even its interface follows this philosophy; it uses no video resources beyond basic colors in your computer monitor. This means it can run even on a system with a faulty video card; if the card can perform at a minimal level, Selkie Photo Recovery can use it.

14. Won't viruses from my computer infect the Rescue Computer or the Selkie Rescue CD?

It is highly unlikely that your photos, graphics or images are carrying viruses, however Selkie Photo Recovery may allow you to copy virus-infected photos and images to the Rescue Computer. For this reason you should make sure you have up-to-date virus protection on the Rescue Computer before you start the rescue operation. Selkie Photo Recovery is immune to viruses for two reasons, it runs in the Linux Operating System and the CD can't be written to.

15. What if I accidentally delete photos when I’m trying to recovery them?

Selkie Photo Recovery protects your photos and graphics from accidental deletion by allowing you read-only access from the rescue computer to the original copies. Once you have recovered your pictures and they are on the rescue computer, you have all important photos, graphics, and images on a system that is operational.
