1. What is Selkie Rescue Data Recovery?
Selkie Rescue is an easy to use program which rescues important data files from a computer that has crashed. Selkie Rescue Data Recovery works even if your computer's operating system won't boot. Selkie Rescue is a bootable CD-based file server, which means it can be used to bypass your crashed operating system. You can rescue files in as few as three keystrokes and in about three minutes.
2. When can I use Selkie Rescue?
You use Selkie Rescue Data Recovery when your computer will not turn on because its operating system is not working. This includes all versions of Windows and systems compatible with Intel (Selkie Rescue is not compatible with Macintosh). Selkie Rescue Data Recovery needs at least 16MB of free RAM and a working keyboard. If the hard drive or CD-ROM drive are not working then Selkie Rescue will not work.
3. Why do I need Selkie Rescue Data Recovery?
If a crashed computer contains critical data — documents, spreadsheets, digital photos, music, videos — you need Selkie Rescue. Selkie Rescue gives you quick access to your files so you can safely copy them to a working computer.
4. How is Selkie Rescue Data Recovery distributed?
You can order a CD to be shipped to you, or you can purchase and download Selkie Rescue. If you purchase and download Selkie you'll also receive instructions to create the bootable Selkie Rescue Data Recovery CD.
5. Who can use Selkie Rescue?
Selkie Rescue was designed to be used by everyone, from novice PC owners to experienced technicians. It has two modes of operation, Basic and Advanced. In Basic mode the user only needs to know the network name of the computer used to rescue data files. If you don't know the network name or a network doesn't exist, Selkie Rescue Data Recovery will automatically create one. Selkie Rescue takes care of everything else. In Advanced mode the technician has almost total control over how Selkie Rescue operates, avoiding malfunctioning hardware, and specifying exactly how the rescue computer and Selkie Rescue Data Recovery will communicate.
6. How do I use Selkie Rescue?
To use Selkie Rescue Data Recovery the failed computer must be networked with a working computer, called the rescue computer. First, start up (boot) the failed computer to the Selkie Rescue CD, reading the screens. Hit Enter until you can choose your workgroup name. Keep hitting Enter until it tells you to go to the rescue computer. Go there — use Network Neighborhood (or My Network Places) to navigate to the computer identified on the network as "Selkie Rescue". Navigate further until you find your data files. Copy them to the rescue computer. You're done.

8. What do I get when I buy Selkie Rescue?
That depends on how you buy it. If you buy a CD, it will be personalized and shipped to you read to use. You can use it immediately to rescue files and data. If you buy a download version, the CD you burn will be identical to the one we ship. The purchase of either version entitles you to registered updates.
9. What if I don't have a CD burner?
If you don't have access to a CD burner, choose the CD version when you purchase Selkie Rescue.
10. How and why is it personalized?
The Selkie Rescue CD is personalized with your name and contact information. The personalization makes it easier for us to send updates.
11. How many copies of the Selkie Rescue CD can I make?
The registered purchaser may install, use, access, display and run one copy of Selkie Rescue Data Recovery on a computer owned by the registered purchaser, such as a workstation, terminal or other device ("Workstation Computer"). A license should be purchased for each workstation computer owned by the registered owner of the software. The first license purchased may be used for two computers without violating the terms of the EULA (End User License Agreement). Legally, you can't sell the CDs, you can't lend them, and you can't give them away.
12. There are other ways to get data off a failed computer. Why use Selkie Rescue Data Recovery?
Selkie Rescue is fast and safe. All other methods for recovery data take more time and also increase the risk that data will be lost. Selkie Rescue is incredibly safe and simple to use.
13. Do other programs let me do the same thing as Selkie Rescue?
No. There are programs which allow you to create backup images of the data on a hard drive in order to make file restoration possible. Unfortunately, the Windows operating system has to be fully functional for such programs to work. Selkie Rescue is designed to run on systems where Windows has become corrupted or failed completely. Selkie Rescue does not depend on Windows in any way.
14. Why such a simple design?
Selkie Rescue's bootable CD is designed to run on sick computers — systems that are failing in some way and need to be accessed with a minimum of fuss. It is designed to put as little strain on an ailing computer as possible. Even its interface follows this philosophy, using no video resources beyond the basic 16-color VGA graphics chip built into every PC. This means it can run even on a system with a faulty video card.
15. Won't viruses from my computer infect the rescue computer, or even the Selkie Rescue CD?
Selkie Rescue Data Recovery does allow you to copy virus infected files to the rescue computer. For this reason you should make sure you have up-to-date virus protection on the rescue computer before you start the rescue operation. Selkie Rescue is immune to viruses because it's impossible for anything to write data to the Selkie Rescue boot CD.
16. What if I accidentally delete files that I can see from the rescue computer?
Selkie Rescue Data Recovery protects your data from accidental deletion by allowing Read-Only access from the rescue computer.
17. What are the Selkie system requirements?
Selkie Rescue System Requirements: Selkie Rescue requires a CD or DVD burner and works with desktop and laptop Windows PCs running Windows desktop, media center, laptop, and server versions from Windows 95 though Vista.
